Mary Mount Convent, the second house of Bethany in Mizoram after Madonna Convent at Kolasib is situated on the Southern end of the capital city, Aizawl. When the Sisters came to Aizawl in 1969, there were no English Medium schools yet. The Canadian Holy Cross Brothers were running a Mizo Medium school since 1952; and when they had to leave due to government order that all foreigners must leave India, Bethany was called in and the existing Mizo School was converted into an English Medium school appropriately named Mary Mount School.
The Sisters enjoyed the warm welcome and support of both clergy and laity alike. Initially there were not many students in the school as appreciation for English Medium was yet to pick up. The Sisters worked hard and gave their best to about 300 students admitted in classes from 1 to 6. Soon the impact of their efforts was felt and students began pouring in. Being the first and only English Medium School in town for several years, Mary Mount was much sought-after for public performances on radio, ID Day and Republic Day etc. Being the only convent in Aizawl town for many years, Mary Mount served as transit house and rest house for other religious on their to their mission stations in other districts. Today, however, there exist many other congregations in and around Aizawl and this need does not exist anymore.
The main ministry of the Sisters at Mary Mount is Education. They teach in Mary Mount School run by the community and at St Paul’s Hr Sec School run by the Montfort Brothers of St Gabriel. Like in all other places, they make themselves available for the needs of the church such as taking care of the sacristy, arranging for Mass, teaching catechism in the parish, preparing people for the Sacraments and getting involved in various activities of the parish. In the first half of the 1990s an attempt was made to run social work ministry too. The beginning was good, but later it was shifted to other places, namely Sihphir and Mamit. Superiors who have led this community were: Sr Gretta, Hariette, Sr Lilitta, Sr Edleburgh, Sr Lucious, Sr Christita, Sr Kiran, Sr Shareena, Sr Amrith and Sr Silvia.
