Community History
Date and year of Establishment: July 12, 1988
Bethany set foot on the soil of Depacherra in 1985. But at the start it was the offshoot of the Convent of Agartala. Even before the convent was established Sr Isabella and Sr Christine Noronha pioneered the mission as touring sisters. They initiated many developmental work, made medical care available and evangelized many people.
The community was canonically erected on 12th July 1988 with Sr Aquinas as the superior and Sr Isabella, Sr Assumpta Maria and Sr Malati as members. Sisters taught in the parish school and were involved in socio-medical and pastoral works. The same continues today. Under these apostolate sisters take up varied activities such as coaching for the weaker ones, adult education classes, knitting, tailoring and weaving classes to the women folk, and many other initiatives with the help of government schemes and projects.
The roads trod were not always easy. The mission that has blossomed today was watered by the waters of hardships and challenges and nurtured by the sacrifices of the sisters and their perseverance coupled with the goodness of the faithful from near and far villages where sisters served. Even today sisters continue to light the flame of mission in the school, hostel, socio-medical and pastoral. Sisters are also involved in faith formation of the people in the parish. Their loving presence is felt and they are greatly appreciated for the transformation and development that have taken place over the decades due to their loving service and commitment.
Former superiors: Sr Aquinas, Sr Irene Tresa, Sr Genevive, Sr Therese Simon, Sr Jossy, Sr Malati, Sr Therese Lagardo, Sr Maria Magdalene, Sr Benedicta Aranha and Sr Kanthi.
