The inspiration to open an independent mission for Bethany Sisters came from Most Rev. Lumen Monteiro Bishop of Agartala. The inspiration was reflected upon by Sr. Edleburgh the Provincial Superior of Bethany’s North East Province and her team. It was Gods’ plan that at the same time the people of Dharmanagar were also on the lookout for a missionary school in the area, as the existing schools in Dharmanagar did not meet their expectations. Making no delay in executing the plan, they found a little hillock owned by one Radhakanti Debnath in Sakaibari area of Dharmanagar. But to construct a building immediately was not possible. Hence it was decided to rent a house which could serve the purpose for both school and residence. Mr. Purnendu Chakraborty, a well- known businessman from Nayapara vacated his go-down for this purpose.
On January 9,1999, the three pioneers Sr Gretta (superior), Sr Janet Mendonca and Sr Shailaja entered the humble abode which was blessed by Fr Kanikai CSC in the presence of the Provincial Superior. On February 11, 1999, Holy Cross Convent School was started in a temporary location with 51 students on the roll. However, plans were in progress regarding the construction of the school building in the land owned by us. On January 17, 2000, the students were shifted to a make-shift, thatched structure in Sakaibari, the present location. On October 27, 2001, Sisters moved to the present campus. Presently we cater to 650 students with excellence in value-based education under the guidance of BES. Sisters received spiritual help from Holy Cross Fathers in Panisagar. Presently the convent comes under Bagbasa parish.
Further development in the apostolate: A hostel for the tribal girls was opened on January 21, 2009, with 11 girls. Presently it has the capacity to accommodate 50 students. They receive government stipend. All the good works begun by the founding Sisters have been carried on faithfully with a few additions. Family visits are a regular feature even today. Although no Christian families are around, Sisters visit the families of other faith and pray with them.
Superiors who led this mission are: Sr Gretta D’ Souza, Sr Eva, Sr Cleopha, Sr Titus, Sr Leena Miranda, Sr Severine Pinto and Sr Sunitha Jyoti.
