Bethany Convent Kathalcherra had its beginning in the year 1983. Kathalcherra was a sub -station under Kumarghat Parish when Fr Hormis was the Parish Priest. At the time of Sister’s arrival there were around 250 Catholic families in the main village mostly Darlong and Garo tribes.
The pioneering members to this new mission were Sr Assumpta Maria, Sr Isabella and Sr Malati. They set foot in Kathalcherra on 5th February, 1983. The community was canonically erected on 3rd July 1983 and Sr Christita was installed superior and Sr Isabella, Sr Irene Tresa, Sr Malati and Sr Elize Mendonca were the members. Sisters plunged themselves into the mission of education, medical, hostel, pastoral and social apostolates. Students poured in from far flung places too and the beginning classes were under the tree until the infrastructure was provided. Right from the start Sisters took keen interest not only in education, but also to the socio-economic development of the people. To meet all the need of God’s people, facilities as well as human resources were made available: hostel for the students; health centre to give health care; social services like literacy classes in the villages, conducted awareness programs and making aware of the various schemes and projects availed by the government with the help of the PLPs. Sisters made their presence felt everywhere by families visits, families rosaries, prayers and activities in the church, attending funeral services, joining in the community feasts and celebrations. Sisters have taken charge of the Maria Sangh – a catholic women association and are also involved in the youth group. Sisters also keep motivating the junior youth through Bethany Champions and Little Way Association.
Today, sisters take active initiative in the hostel, dispensary and socio-medical apostolates apart from school which is in collaboration with the Holy Cross Fathers. They are also actively involved in faith formation of the people in the parish. The presence of Bethany Sisters naturally leads to the development of human resources: empowering the poor, improve health care- health and hygiene etc. Former superiors at Kathalcherra are: Sr Christita, Sr Rose Margaret, Sr Titus, Sr Theresa Simon, Sr Jossy, Sr Rosia, Sr Benedicta Aranha, Sr Theresa Simon, Sr Suman, Sr Christine (in-charge).
