Bethany's foray into Kohima mission followed a visit to Kohima by Rev Mother Macrina, the then Superior General of Bethany, in October 1968. Earlier, in August 1967, Most Rev Hubert Rosario D.D the Bishop of Dibrugarh had invited her to visit Kohima to study the possibility of joining the mission at Christ the King parish and the school that was managed by the Salesian Fathers. On 21 January 1969, Christ the King Convent, Kohima was established with Rev Sr Loyola as the first Superior. Sr Jolinta, Sr Conelly and Sr Delia were the members of the community. They all taught at Christ King Primary School, while Sr Jolinta, a trained nurse, was also involved in the medical care of the people, besides her teaching in the school.
In addition to their medical and educational apostolates, Sisters were also engaged in the pastoral apostolate, visiting the villages, catechizing, preparing people for Liturgy, family visits and family Rosary. Their zeal, commitment and eagerness more than compensated for the challenges faced by the pioneers with an alien culture, a new language, unfamiliar terrain and acute scarcity of water. Initially, the Sisters stayed in a portion of the primary school building. When Christ the King Girls' hostel was opened in 1971, the inmates too shared the same building. Later, in 1974, a new building was constructed for the convent and the hostel. The hostel is a boon for children from far-flung villages to undertake their studies at Christ the King Higher Secondary School.Sr Melissa Darlong is the present Superiorof Christ King Convent, Kohima and the community members are Sr Franceline Veronica and Sr Sunita Edith. Sisters who had served as superiors here are: Sr Loyola, Sr Jolinta, Sr Cleopha, Sr Jean Marie, Sr Doyline, Sr Febronia, Sr Elizabeth Mendonca, Sr Hilda Ida, Sr Melita, Sr Peter, Sr Tresa Monica, Sr Sylvia Monteiro, Sr Amrith and Sr Stella Mathew.
