At the outset of 1960, the Holy Cross Fathers ran hostels for boys and girls who studied in St John’s High School, Kolasib, Mizoram, which was then Lushai District in Assam. It was Rt. Rev. Dr James Knox, the internuncio (the Vatican Representative) to India, who on his visit to Mizoram suggested that some sisters could be invited to take care of the girls in the hostel. In response, Msgr. Breen, the Apostolic Prefect of Halflong Prefecture, invited Bethany Sisters for the cause. For the service of God, the superior general of Bethany and one of her councilors lost no time to come and survey the place in 1961. In spite of learning about the political unrest and backwardness of the place, BethanySisters resolved to take up the North East Mission which was pioneered by Srs Misericors, Dolora, Inviolate and Sylvine on 28thJune 1962. Thus, began the ministry of Bethany at Kolasib, establishing Madonna Convent in July 1962 which remains the first house of the Congregation in the North East.

The initial mission was to look after the girls hostel and teach in the existing St John’s High School (now St John’s Hr Sec School) ran by the Holy Cross Fathers. In 1963, Bethany started St Maria Goretti’s School which is managed by Bethany Educational Society (BES). At present the sisters are engaged in various activities that come with their ministries of education, faith formation, accompaniment of the youth, pastoral care and training of future Sisters.

ST MARIA GORETTI’S SCHOOL, KOLASIB

St Maria Goretti’s School, Kolasib Estd: 1963

St Maria Goretti’s school in its glorious 53 unfolds here the moments captured through the foot prints in the sands of time. It was in 1960 that the Holy Cross Fathers ran hostels both for boys and girls who studied in St John’s High School, Kolasib, Mizoram which was then Lushai District in Assam. It was Rt. Rev. James Knox, the internuncio, Vatican Representative in India, who on his visit to Mizoram suggested that some sisters could be invited to take care of the girls in the hostel. In response Mgr. Breen, the Apostolic Prefect of Halflongprefecture, invited Bethany Sisters in response to which mother Macrina and her councillor visited the place in 1961. Inspite of insurgency problems and backwardness of the place, Bethany sisters resolved to take up the North East Mission which was pioneered by Srs. Misericors, Dolora, Inviolata and Sylvine on 28thJune 1962.

It was then on 7th Nov 1962, the sisters made a day’s journey which hardly takes 2½ hours now, to the District Head quarter, then Aizawl and sought permission to open an English Medium Nursery cum middle school, which was granted on 15th Jan 1963 on the basis of which St Maria Goretti’s school was established the same year with 48 admissions for nursery and 24 for Middle school headed bySrMiscricors, the 1st headmistress. With the passage of time incredible developments of the school stand a proof today in itself. From a small clearing of a jungle with few katchastructures to the present two concrete buildings, two sizeable fields for children to play, children’s park, a good hostel to cater the needs of the girls coming from far flung areas and good sanitary facilities for both boys and girls. With the great effort of the sisters headed by Sr Justina, the school was upgraded to the status of Adhocaided School on April 1975. This was a great monetary relief because the meagre fee collected was not enough to pay the teachers then. In this journey of Education St. Maria Goretti’s school has witnessed the effort and guidance of sisters of various capacities and portfolios. July 17, 1986 was a red letter day because the school was upgraded to Deficit status. Greatthat St Maria Goretti’s school is never at rest since its inception. The school is bubbling with various co- curricular activities throughout the year keeping in mind the BES core values and vision of our founder.

To promote spiritual growth, seminars, recollection and retreats are given to both for the students and teachers. The school promotes prayerful, holy and congenial atmosphere in the school by beginning and ending each day with prayer.St. Maria Goretti’s School has been able to outshine in school extension programme from charity to International competition (Miss Marylyn class IV, the gold medallist of the 5th international karate competition). The students are also incited to take up cleanliness drive in towns and villages and many times the school has been awarded District Cleanliness Award on Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October). The institution keeps in touch with various Government enterprises and NGO’s to facilitate the children to take part in various levels of competitions. The school remains alert to procure the scholarships for ST, SC and Minorities of the school catered by various Government schemes.

The institution has grown mighty today with 1200 students and 34 staff members headed by the present Headmistress Sr Shanthi BS (2016). The girl children are given the first priority and the present gender ratio stands as 593 girls to 557 boys. For the smooth running of the institution the school has formed different committees like Child Right Cell, The Girl Child Abuse Cell and Parent Teachers Association. The school has travelled through its golden journey heading to platinum amidst thousand dreams to fulfil. St Maria Goretti’s has bloomed throughout Mizoram leading the state in various capacities. May St Maria Goretti’s school be an instrument to grant fullness of life to each soul that enters the portal of this institution.
