Community History
 
Date and year of Establishment: January 10, 1979
 
This period is of one year. Pre-novices are helped to know Jesus and understand their vocation and helped to grow in prayer, Christian faith and Gospel Values. They develop human maturity to respond to the call with freedom and personal responsibility with a capacity for discernment of vocation. The Pre-novices learn the essentials of the Institute’s Charism and spirituality; the institute learns the candidate to assess her suitability to the Institute. They develop a keen desire for the mission of Christ in the Church according to the Institute’s Charism and to grow in compassionate love. They further the acquisition of skills and gain community experience by living in a community.
 
Community
Bethany was invited to Lumding by the Bishop of Tezpur, Most Rev Joseph Mittathany who later became Archbishop of Imphal. The frist group of Sisters reached the place on January 10, 1979. Initially, the ministry here was to teach in the existing Don Bosco School. In due time a hostel for girls was opened to accommodate girls from the rural areas. However, the hostel was discontinued years later. Instead, a Vocational Training Centre was started to teach tailoring, knitting and weaving for the drop out girls. About 20-30 girls get trained here every year. In the year 2019, the shared Pre-Novitiate of Northern Province, Eastern province and NorthEast Province was shifted from Kolkata to Lumding and is housed in the same campus as the convent. Former Superiors at Lumding are: Sr Eva, Sr Rose Margaret, Sr Noeline, Sr Hildegard, Sr Melita, Sr Elizabeth, Sr Conely, Sr Titus, Sr Suman, Sr Margaret Surin and Sr Shareena.
