Shillong is the capital city of Meghalaya state and one of the most important destinations in the North East of India, especially for education and tourism. Situated at 1496 metres above sea level, this picturesque city is often called the ‘Scotland of the East’.
Although Bethany came to North East India in 1962 and established houses in most of the seven states by the year 2000, the opportunity to open a convent in Meghalaya eluded us for years. Finally in 2002, forty years after we set foot in the region, we acquired permission to open a house in the Archdiocese of Shillong. Accordingly a house was purchased at Nongrimbah area of Shillong. It served as a home for student Sisters of the province who attend the various colleges in the city. Gradually, pastoral ministry was taken up and the presence of the sisters was felt by the people. Former Superiors at Bethany Study Centre: Sr Noeline, Sr Hariette, Sr Lucious, Sr Cleopha, Sr Olga, Sr Mary Laldikzuali and Sr Hilda Paula.
