Community History
Date and year of Establishment: August 15, 1991
On August 15, 1991, the feast of Assumption of Mary and the Independence Day of India, Sr Lillis, the Provincial Superior canonically erected the community and installed Sr Primiot to be the first Superior of the community. Sr Lucy vanlalnghaki and Sr Dolora were the community members. Being ‘Youth Day’, around two hundred Catholic youth participated in the Eucharist along with other parishioners.
In April 1992, Holy Angels Hostel was blessed in the presence of the sisters and leaders of different commissions of the local church. Initially the hostel accommodated both boys and girls and the sisters looked after it. Some years later, boys` hostel was separated and was looked after by the fathers while the girls` hostel remained with the sisters. On 6 October, 1996, the new convent building put up by the diocese near the school was inaugurated. Initially education was the main apostolate here. Sr Valsala joined the community at Sihphir in 1995 and started the socio-medical apostolate. Sr Therese Zothanpari joined her in 1996. Together they took forward the soci-medical ministry of Bethany here. They eventually trained many young men and women to be health workers. They had periodic meetings and follow up activities. Gradually, the need for rehabilitation of drug addicts was keenly felt and Sr Valsala took the initiative once again. Today, the community looks after a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre for drugs and alcohol addicts.
Superiors who have served in Sihphir are: Sr Primiot, Sr Doyline, Sr Hilda Paula, Sr Christine D’Souza, Sr Mary Joseph and Sr Sukhi Therese.
