The Holy Family Convent was the second house of Bethany opened in the former Halflong Prefecture, and is currently in the Diocese of Aizawl. Since the early 1900s, the Holy Cross Fathers had been ministering to the people of Badarpur, where a sizeable Catholic population was settled. From that center, in the 1950s, Holy Cross Fathers started to minister to the Khasis who had come down to the plains to cultivate paan (betel leaves). In 1957 the Holy Cross Parish, Silchar was founded. At the same time the Fathers started a residential Khasi medium school meant for the Khasi children. Realising that English was necessary for higher education in the neighboring states, the medium of instruction was changed to English in 1966.
Soon a few eminent non-Khasi people requested the Fathers to admit their children in the mission school. The request was heeded to and the doors of Holy Cross were opened to all, irrespective of caste, creed or class. The Fathers soon realized that they needed the assistance of Religious women to run the school and the hostel. Msgr George Breen CSC, Prefect Apostolic of Halflong Prefecture turned to Mother Macrina, Superior General of Bethany, asking the services of Bethany Sisters in the new mission at Silchar. Heeding to his invitation Mother Macrina sent three valiant and brave missionaries. It was on a rainy June 11, 1966, during the worst floods in years, Sisters Sylvine, Hariette and Audrey arrived in Silchar. Due to torrential rain, the telegram they had sent arrived the day after they did. Although no brass band appeared to greet them, there was no dearth of welcoming hearts and hands in the form of the pastor, his assistants and the 300 refugees who had occupied their house to escape the destructive floods. The Sisters looked after the English medium section, starting from LKG to class 1 with the help of lay teachers. The running and management of Holy Cross School was handed over to Bethany Sisters w.e.f January 1970.
Besides running Holy Cross School and Hostel, the community was and is engaged in social work, medical and pastoral care, and prison ministry.
