Viswema mission of Bethany began on 11 February 1977, at St Joseph's School, founded by Fr Stanislaus Coelho SJ. Sisters had accepted to take over the responsibility of the school from the Jesuitsduring the term of Mother Macrina as the Superior General. Along with Sr Noeline who was the Superior and Headmistress, Sr Peace, Sr Ivan and Sr A P Theresa formed the new community.
The new community, passionate about their mission in the school, also busied themselves by reaching out to the people of the village and its neighbourhood. Day after day, after their completing their chores in the school, they visited families, organized prayers, taught catechism, instructed the families on health and hygiene, laying stress always on Christian and family values, spiritual practices, social awareness and service. The management of the school was transferred from the Jesuits to the Bethany Sisters on 8 September 1986. On 23 December 1986, the death anniversary of our founder Father RFC Mascarenhas, the foundation for a new convent building was laid by Fr Stanislaus Coelho SJ. The new convent was inaugurated on 4 April 1988, by Bishop Abraham.
From the very beginning, hostel that served as home away from home for students from the neighbouring villages was a distinct part of Bethany’s mission here. Finding Viswema to be an ideal place for a formation house, the "Come and See" programme for the candidates was started in 1986, with Sr Lucy Maria as the first Candidate-in-charge. There was great joy and celebration when Sr Agatha Vitsu of Viswema made her First Profession in Bethany in the year 2011. Others who joined Bethany from Viswema mission include Sr Adu Celine, Sr SulaheleTeresa, Sr Gladys, Sr Viketonu Teresa Rhetso and Sr Pusale Louisa Kikhi. From the very beginning, Sisters realized that the village lacked basic healthcare facilities. Concerned about this, they opened a dispensary with Sr Alice Thomas as the first full-time nurse who regularly toured the villages. Over the years, with a well-equipped dispensary, Sisters continue to provide healthcare to the people of the Viswema and the neighbouring villages. The superiors who guided the mission at Viswema include Sr Noeline, Sr Selina, Sr Ordelia, Sr Chrisette, Sr Carol, Sr Jean Marie, Sr Leena Serrao and Sr Harsha. At present Sr Chrisette is the Superior of the convent and the community members are: Sr Anna Francesca Marak, Sr Imani, Sr Alice Thomas, Sr Veronica Zohmingliani, and Sr Wanrimon Kharbuli.
