APOSTOLIC NUNCIO VISITS BARAK VALLEY CATHOLIC CHURCHSILCHAR,December 18, 2022It was a great experience for the Catholic community of Barak Valley in Cachar District of Assam when His Excellency Most Rev. Leopoldo Girellli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, visited Silchar on the 15th and 16th of December 2022. The Nuncio arrived at Silchar airport at 1.30 pm on 15th December 2022, and was received by a team of dignitaries including Rt Rev Stephen Rotluanga, Bishop of the Aizawl Diocese, Rev Fr Joachim Walder the Episcopal Vicar of Barak valley, and a large number of faithful and well wishers including priests, religious sisters, laity and students of Holy Cross School Silchar. He was specially honoured with the welcoming steps of the beautiful Khasi dance, performed by the youth of Silchar Parish. He was then escorted to Udharbond mission for a short visit where the students of St Mary’s School and the RNDM Sisters offered a short reception. On the 16th of December 2022, the Apostolic Nuncio officiated at the Holy Mass beginning at 10.00 am at the grounds of Holy Cross School Silchar. There was a great reception for the Nuncio by a huge public gathering of people. All the priests working in the Barak valley region of the diocese concelebrated the Mass; and a large number of religious Sisters, Fathers, and Brothers coming from different institutions of the region participated in the solemnity. The catechists from different parishes, lay leaders, and the parishioners were present on the joyful occasion. His Excellency in his homily thanked God for the gift of the Church in the remote corners of the Barak valley region and exclaimed with joy the beauty of people, their multicultural life style and the serene environment. The lay leaders from different parishes were honored by the Nuncio with certificates of appreciation. |
The felicitation programme that was an array of colorful cultural dances by different parishes and institutions of the Barak valley area was a mesmerizing view to behold. Speaking on the occasion Bishop Stephen Rotluanga highlighted the rich culture of the northeast people that contributes to more than 40% of India’s cultural spectrum. His Excellency Leopoldo Girelli expressed his praise for the people of the region and he himself was a sign of great bonding and love amidst the cultures. Fr Joachim Walder, Fr Justin, Fr Pushparaj, Bethany Sisters, Br Reggie sdb and his staff in collaboration with many others, helped out the dynamics of the programme. |
