The first ever Convention of Bethany Educational Society (BES) Silchar Unit was held at Mary Mount School Aizawl from 26th -27th of September 2024. The inaugural program was held at 8.45 am on the 26th of September in Mary Mount School Auditorium. It began with a reading from the Holy Bible and a prayer by Sr. Therese Darlong BS and Mrs. Vanlalrinchhani respectively. A meaningful prayer dance by students of Mary Mount School followed. The five wicks of the ceremonial lamp were lit by Sr. Clara Mendonca BS, Corporate Manager of BES Silchar Unit, Sr. Harsha BS, Coordinator for Education Silchar Province, Sr. Joy BS, former Provincial Superior of North East Province, Sr. Shanthi BS, Headmistress, Mary Mount School Aizawl and Mr. Lian Jacob, assistant teacher at St. Maria Goretti’s School Kolasib. Sr. Harsha presided over the formal welcoming ceremony of the dignitaries, headmistresses and managers of the three BES schools. Each one was welcomed with a specially made sash, a sapling and a memento. The participants welcomed each other with a sash made for the occasion. Soon after, the Corporate Manager of BES Silchar Unit Sr. Clara Mendonca, delivered her keynote address and declared the Convention open by releasing three uniquely decorated balloons. | |
After a short break, Sr. Melissa Darlong took the first input session of the day on the theme ‘Promotion of Peace and Harmony’. The next session was taken by Sr. Clara on the topic ‘Upholding Justice, Liberty, Equality & Fraternity’. The third input session of the day was on the topic ‘Education for excellence and self-reliance’, given by Sr. Shanthi Luhar BS. After a lunch break of an hour Sr. Mary Naulak gave the fourth and last input session of the day on: ‘Caring for Mother Earth’. The next two hours were spent on group discussion based on the given questions and in reporting the groups’ answers. At 5.00 pm there was a dazzling cultural evening during which students of Mary Mount put up a splendid performance. Mr. John LT Sanga, Joint Director, Department of Home, Government of Mizoram was the special guest of the evening. Speaking on the occasion he shared about his long association with Bethany Sisters since his student days at St. Maria Goretti’s School Kolasib and then at Holy Cross Silchar. He appreciated the contributions of BES in particular and Catholic Church in general in the field of education. Staff of all the three schools added their own special performances to the already rich spread of cultural items. | |
The first quarter of the second day of the Convention was spent on learning the history of Evolvement of BES Conventions. Sr. Joy put up an impressive presentation on the topic. Through a questionnaire, participants were tested on their knowledge of Bethany and BES. There was another group discussion based on pre-formulated questions. Before lunchbreak there was sharing of impressions moderated by Sr. Cleopha BS. Two staff members from all the schools and a few Sisters from other management schools shared their impression about the Convention. Post lunch, there was planning session chaired by Sr. Joy. Based on the responses to the questions on the four priorities of BES Platinum Jubilee year, common action plan was drawn up. However, refining of the plan will be made by individual schools by the 15th of October 2024. It was almost 3 pm when the Corporate Manager Sr. Clara Mendonca gave the concluding message and declared the First BES Convention of Silchar Province closed. Before departing, Sr. Shanthi BS delivered a vote of thanks and the convention was concluded with a prayer session led by Sr. Shanthi Luhar. | |
